Yumi Song & Yishay Garbasz

Yumi Song & Yishay Garbasz taking part in the exhibition “Oriental Discourse” Tokyo.

Yumi Song & Yishay Garbasz art work in exhibition. This exhibition examines where the appeal of East Asian women’s expressions come from. Orientalism is a perspective or thought that has a preference for the East or a longing for the Eastern world. The gaze is directed from the West. Gender Project

Exploring what is the minimal amount of visual detail that determines gender, as well as using negative space, multiple exposure self portraits with large format camera, 2002-2003
this was both exploration of the performativity and visual depiction of gender as well as the use of negative space. What is the most amount of negative space that will still make a strong art work. What is the minimal amount of visual information that provides our brain with the identifying “knowledge” of gender.
This project relied of performative skill and theater set and costume design as well as sketch and story board design skills. Each photograph was created over a 24-48 straight hours of work. With specific lighting equipment I had to construct for this project to be able to control light more accurately more similar to the way light is controlled in the theater rather then the photo studio.
